ER vs. Emergency Dentist: Does It Really Matter Where You Go First?

April 10, 2026
|

Yes, when you have a dental emergency, where you go matters.

Here’s a quick guide:

  • If your emergency is traumatic and involves the head or body, you should go to the emergency room first. You can contact us after you’ve been declared safe.
  • If you have a tooth infection or an oral injury, you should visit the dentist rather than the emergency room.

It’s important to remember that emergency room professionals often don't perform root canal treatment, extractions, or other dental services. So, visiting the ER for a dental emergency that is limited to the teeth, gums, and oral tissues will be of little benefit.

When to Contact Your Emergency Dentist in Blacktown

If you experience any of the following, you should contact the dentist for guidance:

  • A worsening toothache
  • Jaw or facial swelling
  • Broken tooth or restoration
  • General mouth injury

If you’re unsure, give us a call!

We encourage you to contact us whenever you notice oral health changes that persist or worsen, even if the issue is not a dental emergency.

Dental Emergencies: How to Lower Your Risks

To reduce your risk of dental emergencies, be sure to visit the dentist regularly for check-ups and cleans. Checks allow us to diagnose and treat problems early before they become painful, and teeth cleaning removes the ingredients that lead to decay and oral infections.

Brushing and flossing after meals, or at least twice daily, is also vital to maintaining your oral health and avoiding dental emergencies.

If you compete in sports, remember to wear your mouthguard. If you grind your teeth (bruxism), be sure to wear a nightguard.
