Did you know you should replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months? The same goes for the brush heads if you use an electric toothbrush.

You'll know it's time to replace your brush or brush head when the bristles become discoloured or frayed. It is also a good idea to replace your toothbrush or brush head after you've been sick, regardless of its age, to prevent reinfection.

Children sometimes brush harder and may need a toothbrush replacement sooner than 3 or 4 months.

Tips for Toothbrush Maintenance

Here are some simple tips and tricks for prolonging the life of your toothbrush.

  • Proper Storage — Avoid storing your toothbrush in a closed container, as it promotes bacterial growth. Instead, store it upright in the open air where it can dry thoroughly after each use.
  • Don't Share — Never share a toothbrush with anyone, as it promotes the spread of bacteria and viruses.
  • Thorough Rinsing — Be sure to clean and rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after each use to remove any debris or excess toothpaste, ensuring it is clean for your next brushing session.
  • Earlier Replacement — If you have a weakened immune system, replace your toothbrush or brush head more often.

Understanding Proper Tooth Brushing Techniques

Brushing your teeth twice daily helps keep them clean and promotes good oral health, making you less susceptible to problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Knowing how to brush properly is also the key to your success with home care.

Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the tooth and brush gently in circular motions near the gumline, being careful not to irritate the gum tissue. Sweep debris away from the gumline and off the tooth. Gently move the toothbrush around your entire mouth, brushing for two minutes. Make sure to brush your tongue and rinse your toothbrush and mouth thoroughly afterwards.
