A dental crown is a common restoration designed to cover and protect a damaged or decayed tooth. In the past, the dental crown process involved at least two visits to your Blacktown dental clinic, but with the invention of the CEREC milling machine, your dentist can restore your oral health and smile in just one appointment.
So, what is involved in the CEREC same-day crown process? Keep reading to learn more.
What Is CEREC Technology?
Traditional dental crowns take two dental visits; the first visit involves tooth preparation and temporary crown placement. Then, at the second visit, your dentist places the permanent crown. With CEREC technology, there’s no need for a temporary crown; this streamlines the process and saves you valuable time.
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Using computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing (CAM), we can capture digital images and design and create your dental crown while you wait comfortably in one of our treatment rooms.
The CEREC Same-Day Process Explained
Here are the steps of the CEREC same-day crown procedure:
- Tooth preparation — First, we must prepare your tooth for the dental crown. We do this by removing decay and shaping your tooth in preparation for the crown. With CEREC crowns, we don’t have to remove nearly as much healthy tooth structure.
- Impressions — Next, we take digital impressions of your affected tooth. Using a small camera, we capture 3-D images. Gone are the days of messy, uncomfortable impressions.
- Crown creation — Your impressions are then sent to a computer, where we create a model. We can precisely create your crown’s shape and shade using this advanced technology.
- Crown fabrication — Our dental clinic’s milling machine creates your crown from a ceramic block. This milling process takes about 15 minutes.
- Crown placement — Once your dental crown is ready, we polish it and check the fit before attaching it with dental cement. When you’re happy with the fit and appearance, we provide aftercare instructions for your new tooth.
