Are there different types of dentures?

Dentures are removable, mouthpiece-like prosthetic devices designed to replace the missing teeth and surrounding tissue of patients who, whether due to decay, accident, disease or age, have lost some or all of their teeth. Each set of dentures is custom-made, typically of natural-looking porcelain, acrylic resin, or an acrylic resin-metal combination.

Most sets of dentures fall into one of three categories:

  • Complete – When all of the teeth from the upper or lower jaw, or both, are missing, a complete denture may be required. Complete dentures are designed to fit snugly over the gums and jawbone.
  • Partial – In cases in which a few teeth are missing, a partial denture may be recommended. Partial dentures are designed to attach to remaining teeth via clasps or other attachments, filling in gaps between natural teeth and restoring the form and function of the mouth.
  • Implant-supported – Removable dentures that attach to dental implants in the jawbone, for which they receive support and stability. Implant-supported dentures are known for providing a particularly secure and comfortable fit.
